Avid Hyundai owners are constantly learning more about their vehicles, how to best maintain them, and what goes into making Hyundai parts work. Having an understanding of the basics can help you in the event of an emergency, but it’s also just nice knowledge to have about the vehicle that gets you to and from every day.

What’s an engine cylinder?

One of the biggest things working under the hood of your car is the cylinder. It is the power unit of the engine where the fuel is burned and turned into mechanical energy. This is the energy that runs your car.

What are the cylinder types?

  • Four-cylinder
  • Six-cylinder
  • Eight-cylinder

Each of these types reflects the number of cylinders, thereby the rate and amount of power.

  • Inline engine
  • V engine

These terms refer to the shape of the engine cylinders, which either way are made of metal and sealed to contain the ignition and combustion that makes your car function.

What if cylinders don’t work properly?

Misfiring, leaking, or overheating cylinders can cause major problems, most likely noticed due to a sweet, rubbery smell, a coolant leak, or grey smoke. If any of these issues occur, or an engine warning on your dash, you’ll need to get your vehicle serviced right away before further harm is done to your engine.

Thankfully these issues are fairly rare, and proper upkeep like oil changes can go a long way toward diagnosing potential issues in the future. Our Hyundai service center serving the greater San Fernando Valley area would be pleased to assist you further with maintenance, repairs, and parts-related questions.
