In California, smog inspections are required for all vehicles that were manufactured before 1976. Diesel-powered vehicles that were built before 1996 that weigh more than 8,500 pounds are also subject to these inspections. These inspections must be completed every other registration-renewal period. If you drive a new car that's six years old or newer, you're exempt from this biennial smog certification. However, if you sell your car or trade it in, you'll need to provide the vehicle's new owner with evidence of a current smog certification.
